Professor Richard Curtin, director of the University of Michigan’s famed US consumer confidence index, believes that there are “green shoots” (to use an old phrase that Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke has made popular once again), “reflecting the basic recognition that the worst of the crisis was during the last quarter of last year and the first quarter of this year”.
